You have probably already heard of the recent Facebook data breach. The exposed data includes the personal information of over 540 million Facebook users from 106 countries. It includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and, in some cases, email addresses.
Unfortunately, data breaches are increasing expotentially and continue to put you and your business at risk. Facebook is one of many and I can guarantee there will be more to follow.
So what do you do now to check whether you are part of a breach?
One well-known site that tracks data breaches is “Have I Been Pwned.” This search will show you if you’ve been part of this breach, as well as any other breaches in which your data may have been compromised.
What should you do if your credentials have been compromised?
We recommend that users take a few steps to protect their information:
- Change passwords when applicable and or for any accounts that obtain sensitive data. Especially, if you have the tendency to use the same password or a variation of the same password for multiple accounts (Which is highly discouraged). Additionally, when creating passwords use strong passwords or passphrases which are easier to remember but harder to crack.
- Review your accounts for suspicious activity. Be cautious of any unsolicited communications that ask for your personal data or refer you to a webpage asking for personal data.
- Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails.
- Start using two-factor authentication.
Dark Web ID from Trinity Worldwide Technologies detects your compromised credentials in real-time on the Dark Web. Using a proprietary technology, we vigilantly search the most secretive corners of the Internet to find compromised credentials associated with your company, contractors and other personnel, and notifies you immediately when these critical assets are compromised, before they are used for identity theft, data breaches or other crimes.
We would like to offer you a complimentary Dark Web scan for your company. It will tell you if any of your employees’ login/password combinations are on any of more than 600,000 sites on the Dark Web.
Faced with such a range of obstacles, businesses need to change the way they prioritize cybersecurity. If you have not already done so, the first step is to create a cyber readiness plan that includes a series of layered security that protects, detects and responds to attacks.
